“OUT OF THE DUST OF THE GROUND” – PRIYAH BHAGAT’S MIXED MEDIA FIGURES
RICHMOND, VA • A new art exhibition opens at Elegba Folklore Society’s Cultural Center on June 6 and will run through August 31. The show is entitled Out of the Dust of the Ground. The artist, Priyah Bhagat, is presenting mixed media dolls and doll-influenced figures where cast iron pans and carefully selected ornamentation from found objects form the faces, and the bodies are adorned textile strips. This exhibition opens during the First Fridays Art, 5p – 9p. Elegba Folklore Society’s Cultural Center is located in the RVA Arts District at 101 E. Broad Street, the corner of 1st & Broad.
Out of the Dust of the Ground is a comprehensive exhibition of 17 objects depicting humanistic figures, some contemporary, some ancestral and all folkloric. Each express relationships, place and legacy. Says Priyah Bhagat, “It is not always about the finished product but the meditation on the act of creating that act empowers my being; that spirit, that energy.”
Ms. Bhagat has exhibited her work locally previously at Elegba Folklore Society’s Cultural Center, at Pine Camp Arts Center, Artworks and at Virginia Commonwealth University, among other galleries. Her dolls are a part of several individual collections.
Gallery tours are available by reservation.
