Ruby Dee, an acclaimed actor and civil rights activist whose versatile career spanned stage, radio, television and film, joined the ancestors Wednesday night at home in New Rochelle, N.Y., while surrounded by her children and grandchildren.
Dee, who frequently acted alongside her husband of 56 years, Ossie Davis, was active in civil rights issues and efforts to promote the cause of blacks in the entertainment industry. The couple’s push for social justice was lifelong and greatly appreciated by all.
We at the Elegba Folklore Society were blessed to have her as the keynote speaker during the 2011 Capital City Kwanzaa Festival, where she shared her words of wisdom and electrifying presence. We send prayers and strength to her family as we celebrate the life of this mighty ancestor.
