SUMMARY:New Art Exhibit: Obscura at Elegba Folklore Society
DESCRIPTION:Growth 18 by 24 on Water Color Paper Pen\, pencil and color pencil \nNicole Wandera’s paintings\, a collection called Obscura\, will open on Friday\, February 3 in Elegba Folklore Society’s Cultural Center\, 101 East Broad Street\, in a reception from 5p – 9p. Obscura runs through April 30\, 2017. \nFrom the Latin word for darkness\, this exhibition lifts the veil off the superficial to reveal inner expressions of self. The portrayals\, collectively\, answer Wandera’s question\, “Who are we and what part of ourselves do we allow others to see?” What the artist shows\, through the subtle densities of pen\, pencil and color pencil\, is the interplay of internal energy fields\, the environment of the “true self.” \nNicole Wandara\, born in Nairobi\, is a student in Virginia Commonwealth University’s School of the Arts\, after some study at Brooklyn’s Pratt Institute. She has exhibited at the World Bank and at Raw Artists\, Brooklyn. \nShe says\, “I believe creativity is like breathing\, it is a constantly evolving dialogue with the universe. I channel its energy to help create my own visual stories. These stories tell of my experiences\, what I have learned\, and how the people I have met have influenced my life. I use art as a platform to discuss the controversial issues that plague our society\, such as gender\, race\, human rights and our disintegrating environment. My goal is to reach into your mind \, change your perspective and hopefully inspire you.” \n

SUMMARY:The Flag Series: Fingers Tracing Places of Aspiration (NEW ART AT ELEGBA FOLKLORE SOCIETY)
DESCRIPTION:New Art Opening at Elegba Folklore Society’s Cultural Center\n\nSukenya Best’s monotypes will be on view in an exhibition called The Flag Series: Fingers Tracing Places of Aspiration.  The show will open on Friday\, August 5\, 5:00p – 9:00p\, at Elegba Folklore Society’s Cultural Center during the First Fridays Artwalk.  The Cultural Center is located in the RVA Arts District\, 101 East Broad Street\, downtown at 1st and Broad.  Music will also be featured and refreshments will be served.\n\nThe art exudes color and movement via printmaking where the ink is rolled onto a flat surface\, manipulating the surface\, laying paper on it\, and then hand pulling the whole thing through a press\, according to the artist.  Ms. Best says\, “Dragging my fingers and stamping my palms in ink created the various textures within each print. Much of the geometric compositions within the pieces were inspired by international flag designs.  The process began to push past the flag\, so the very last print became a personal design that is symbolic of time.”  In the printmaking process\, Ms. Best enhances original flags in essence and symbolism with rhythm and texture.\n\nMs. Best has exhibited at Museum of Science & Industry (Chicago)\, Pen & Brush Inc. (New York)\, Pittsburgh Center for the Arts (Pennsylvania)\, Kansas City Art Institute (Missouri)\, Corcoran School of Arts (Washington DC) and the Cultural Arts Center at Glen Allen (Virginia)\, among other locations.  Her art is found in collections in both New DeIhi and Gujarat in India.  She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Virginia Commonwealth University and a Master of Fine Arts degree from University of Tennessee\, Knoxville.  She has studied abroad in Zimbabwe and London.\n\nElegba Folklore Society is a year-round\, lively celebration of African and African American culture.  In addition to engagement in the visual arts and material culture\, programming includes dance theatre and music\, cultural history tours and cultural arts festivals.  Elegba is an Orisa\, or intercessor\, who opens the roads to bring clarity our of confusion.\n\nThe Flag Series: Fingers Tracing Places of Aspiration runs through September 30.

SUMMARY:RVA as Seen Through the Pinhole
DESCRIPTION:Richmond\, VA • RVA as Seen Through the Pinhole will open as a part of the First Friday’s ArtWalk\, 5p – 9p on Friday\, September 5 at Ęlęgba Folklore Society’s Cultural Center\, 101 East Broad Street in the downtown RVA arts district at the corner of 1st and Broad. This exhibition of black and white photographs will be available through November 30. The artist\, James W. Draper\, Jr.\, produced the photographs using the techniques of pinhole photography. \nRVA as Seen Through the Pinhole is a series of photographs depicting scenes around Richmond. This series demonstrates the artist’s fascination with the light tight box or camera obscura and its potential. Says Draper\, “The pinhole camera is unconventional photography that challenges the analog in me. The pinhole gives me freedom to go beyond traditional photography.” Because the camera obscura functions like a projector or like a recorder\, it can support creativity in the pinhole artist by producing unique images and ideas. \nA pinhole camera and imagery to record will be included in the exhibition\, and visitors to the cultural center can try it out. \nHistorically\, and according to pinhole expert and enthusiast Anita Chernewski\, the image-forming ability of a tiny hole is thought to have been known thousands of years ago by nomadic people of North Africa\, who lived in animal skin tents. A pinhole in the tent would project an image of the brilliant scene outside. The pinhole photographic work of Afro Canadian artist Melinda Mollineaux commemorates the forgotten place of Cadboro Bay\, where Black people gathered to celebrate Emancipation Day in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. \nPhotographer\, Draper\, with a Masters Degree from Virginia State University\, is a retired educator in Richmond Public Schools. He has been a member of the Camera Club of Richmond\, National Conference of Artists and the Virginia Educational Media Association\, among others. He has taught photography at J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College\, and he has served as a staff photographer at Richmond Free Press. \nDraper has exhibited widely around Virginia\, and he has received numerous awards and honors in the field.
