SUMMARY:unVeiled EsSence Opens at Elegba Folklore Society
DESCRIPTION:NEW ART AT ELEGBA FOLKLORE SOCIETY\n“unVeiled EsSence“\nfeaturing the paintings of Orisegun Olomidun \nSeptember 7 – November 30\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPainter\, arts educator and percussionist\, Orisegun Olomidun opens a new exhibition in Elegba Folklore Society’s Cultural Center on September 7\, 2018 entitled\, unVeiled EsSence.  The show\, which features one and two dimensional acrylic gridding on canvases\, will run will run through November 30.  Attend the opening reception on September 7\, 5p – 9p\, and enjoy live music and refreshments as a part of the 1st Fridays ArtWalk.  The Society’s Cultural Center is located in the downtown Richmond Arts District at 101 E. Broad Street at the corner of 1st and Broad.\n\nOlomidun says\, “My intent is to create art that exhibits energy\, intensity and integrity which transforms the environment in which it is placed\, performed and experienced –- connecting to an expanding consciousness.   My belief is that art should always be alive; constantly inspiring its audience to re-examine the reality around them and experience the visual arts\, not merely as tangible objects\, but also as ideas manifested in a physical form.”  Some of the works incorporate reclaimed materials while others show a superimposition of the same.   In so doing\, the artist says that the work “speaks back\, beckoning the dormancy within each of us to be awakened\, revealed\, exposed.”\n\nA graduate of the University of Cincinnati College of Design\, Architecture and Art\, Olomidun holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts and a Master of Arts from the Columbia College of Chicago’s Center for Book and Paper Arts.  He has exhibited widely in multiple states in both solo and group shows\, and he had been an artist-in-residence in a long list of schools\, educational institutes and museums over three decades.\n\n\nFor more\, contact Elegba Folklore Society at 804.644.3900 or story1@efsinc.org.

SUMMARY:In the Beginning… Virginia\, Along the Trail of Enslaved Africans (Cultural History Tour)
DESCRIPTION:Journey into Richmond’s history to visit the sites where few monuments exist.  These newly marked sites tell the other half of the story; the story that lives between the pages of history books — in red\, white and black.  An interactive experience along the Trail of Enslaved Africans\, attendees have the chance to ponder the impact of enslavement on the enslaved as shared in their own words and from their own view.  Embarking by bus after a contextual visit to the Society’s cultural center\, participants will walk in our ancestors’ footsteps from their arrival point at river’s edge into Shockoe Bottom\, the area of Richmond that housed the holding pens\, jails\, blocks and burial ground.  The interpreters will interweave the narratives of enslaved Africans with the historical record\, characterizations of the day and music.  Disembarking from your bus and along the walk\, participants will have the chance to immerse themselves in past occurrences that impact our perspectives today. \n$15/Adults\, $7.50/Children under 12. \nReserve by Thursday\, November 1\n804.644.3900 or story1@efsinc.org. \n  \n\nCONTACT US
